“My child already gets straight A’s in math. Why would they need enrichment?”

I hear this from parents all the time. It is a completely fair question. If report cards look perfect, why add more to their plate?

Here is the honest truth: good grades don’t automatically mean a child is being challenged.

A student can easily breeze through school math, clear every test with flying colors, and still be completely bored out of their mind. They finish classwork in five minutes flat. They rarely, if ever, make a mistake. Or sometimes they make too many mistakes because they just don't care.

The work is too easy and hence they never actually learn how to fail, try again, or dig deep. School math is great for building basic competence, but it rarely sparks true curiosity or resilience. That is exactly where specialized math enrichment steps in.

Sometimes “behaviour problems” are really signs of under-challenge

Under-challenged children don’t always look gifted. Sometimes they look distracted, restless, or “difficult.”

Mary in Gifted: bored, disengaged, and uninterested—not because she can’t do the work, but because the work isn’t asking enough of her.

A few years ago, I tutored a brilliant fourth grader. He intuitively solved problems using algebraic concepts even though he had never been taught those.

Yet, his school called his mom because he was causing trouble in class. His mom genuinely asked me one evening, “How much trouble does he give you during your sessions?”

I laughed. "Honestly? None. I absolutely love working with him."

The secret wasn't magic; it was just keeping his brain moving. Schools have an incredibly tough job balancing standardized test prep for dozens of kids at once.

As a one-on-one tutor, I have the luxury to meet a child exactly where they are and push them right to their limits. He didn't want worksheets; he wanted to solve puzzles, defend his logic, and sweat over a problem a little bit.

Once he was challenged, the "behavior issues" completely vanished.

What math enrichment really means

Math enrichment for gifted students is not “more worksheets.”

It’s not accelerating just for the sake of moving ahead.

It’s about giving students opportunities to:

  • solve unfamiliar, non-routine problems,

  • explain and defend their thinking,

  • persevere when the answer isn’t obvious,

  • and experience the joy of figuring something out.

What math enrichment really means.' It is not more worksheets. It features several panels of children enthusiastically collaborating on math challenges, explaining their thinking at a whiteboard, and celebrating a breakthrough

How to do that?

I use

  • Beast Academy & Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) curriculum: These are the gold standards for a reason. They move away from repetitive drills and force kids to apply deep logical reasoning to highly complex, creative problems.

  • Math Competitions: Training for contests like Math Kangaroo or (AMC Australia), MOEMS (or APSMO Australia), or AMC 8 gives kids a healthy, community-driven arena to test their skills and connect with other math-loving peers.

What parents and students actually say about math enrichment

Over the years, I’ve asked parents and students a simple question:

How did math enrichment using Beast Academy or AoPS or competition preparation help your child?

The answers have been revealing.

Parents of students who had previously struggled with math often shared that enrichment made school math easier and helped improve their grades.

But families of students who were already strong in math described something different.

They talked about:

  • increased confidence,

  • a deeper love of math,

  • and a genuine enthusiasm for problem-solving.

Here's an experience of one of my students. She got straight A's but she knew where she struggled even without it showing in her grades.

I first started working with Vasudha in 8th grade, when I was struggling with math and felt afraid of certain concepts, especially higher-level problem solving. School math seemed manageable, but anything beyond that felt intimidating. Through her classes, I’ve been consistently working on the AoPS curriculum for the past 2 years, including Beast Academy, Prealgebra, Algebra, and Geometry. These books are known to be extremely challenging, but Vasudha’s guidance has helped me overcome my fear and build confidence in tackling advanced and out-of-the-box problems. Compared to AoPS, school math now feels easy, almost like a cakewalk.

And One from my student's parent

“More than a math teacher, we found Ms. Vasudha to be a wonderful guru, guide, and mentor. Under her guidance, my child built a strong math foundation, qualified for a state math competition, and developed the confidence and problem-solving skills that continue to support him academically—even beyond school. The lessons he learned went far beyond mathematics and will stay with him for life.”

Signs your gifted student may benefit from math enrichment

How do you know if your child is coasting? Look for these signs:

  • They fly through homework in minutes without hitting a single speedbump.

  • Or they might not do their homework at all. I know a lot of kids who figured out even if they get an F in their homework (basically not do the homework) they'll still get an A at the end of their year because they will ace their tests and exams! (Some serious math calculation there).

This is also why they get into trouble.

  • Constant questions like, "What's next?" or "Is there a harder puzzle?"

  • They seem checked out during regular class hours.

  • The Straight-A Trap: They get perfect grades, but they have never actually experienced a "productive struggle."

That last one is critical. If a child never learns how to safely fail and struggle when the stakes are low, they will panic the moment they hit complex high school math or advanced competitive tracks like the AMC 8 or Math Kangaroo.

I've seen several of my own friends who've been top students in their school struggle at college because they've never seen complex problem-solving questions before. The perfect A+ students were the ones who gave up first because they did not know where to begin. They just froze.

That's why productive struggle matters

If a kid can solve every single problem on a page in under ten seconds, they aren't actually practicing math. They are just practicing obedience.

Real math involves getting stuck. It involves scratching your head, trying an approach, realizing it failed, and pivoting to a new strategy. This is productive struggle, and it is the absolute cornerstone of meaningful math enrichment for gifted students.

Productive Struggle is

Not: “I got it right immediately.” But: “I didn’t know how to do it at first—and I figured it out.”

Sometimes that might even take 3 days! I've had students who've persisted that long.

That confidence lasts.

My goal as a tutor

At V’s Online Math Tutoring, I work with students in grades 3–8—especially gifted and motivated learners.

My goal is not simply to help students get answers faster.

It’s to help them:

  • think deeply,

  • communicate their reasoning,

  • build independence,

  • and genuinely enjoy problem-solving.

I love it when the child asks

"Can I try another one? Can we do another puzzle please"

—that’s when real learning begins.

Is your child ready?

If your child gets good grades but seems under-challenged, math enrichment may be exactly what they need.

Sometimes the students who need enrichment most are the ones everyone assumes are “already doing fine.”

And often, all they need is the right challenge. Let's not just push them to do more or faster. Let's give them work so that they can slow down and think.

If that sounds like your child, let’s talk.

I offer a free consultation where we can discuss your child’s current math experience, their strengths, and whether enrichment would be a good fit.

Sometimes a short conversation is all it takes to uncover what your child really needs.

Book your free consultation today—and let’s help your child fall in love with challenging math.
